Joshua 2
Overview
2:1 Rahab receives and conceals the two spies sent from Shittim;
2:8 The covenant between her and them;
2:23 Their return and relation. Verse 1sentor, had sentShittimNumbers 25:1, 33:49 to spy secretly13:2, 13:17-21; Judges 18:2, 18:14, 18:17; Matthew 10:16; Ephesians 5:5 even JerichoJoshua 5:10, 6:1-24 harlot's houseThough the word zonah generally denotes a prostitute, yet many very learned men are of opinion that it should be here rendered an innkeeper or hostess, from zoon, to furnish or provide food. In this sense it was understood by the Targumist, who renders it, ittetha pundekeetha, "a woman, a tavern-keeper," and so St. Chrysostome, in his second sermon on Repentance, calls herπανδοκευτρια. The Greek πορνη, by which the LXX render it, and which is adopted by the Apostles, is derived from περναω, to sell, and is also supposed to denote a tavern keeper. Among the ancients, women generally kept houses of entertainment. Herodotus says, "Among the Egyptians, the women carry on all commercial concerns, and keep taverns, while the men continue at home and weave." The same custom prevailed among the Greeks. 6:17, 6:25; Matthew 1:5, Rachab, Joshua 21:31; Habakkuk 3:1; James 2:25 lodgedHeb. layReciprocalGenesis 42:9 - Ye are spies; Deuteronomy 1:24 - General; Joshua 3:1 - Shittim; 6:22 - Joshua; 7:2 - Go up; 18:12 - Jericho; 18:21 - Jericho; Judges 1:23 - sent; 11:1 - an harlot; 1 Samuel 26:4 - General; 1 Kings 3:16 - two women; 1 Chronicles 19:3 - to search; Luke 7:19 - two; 19:1 - Jericho Verse 2told the kingPsalm 127:1; Proverbs 21:30; Isaiah 43:13; Daniel 4:35ReciprocalDeuteronomy 1:24 - General Verse 3BringJoshua 10:23; Genesis 38:24; Leviticus 24:14; Job 21:30; John 19:4; Acts 12:4, 12:6 to searchGenesis 42:9-12, 42:31; 2 Samuel 10:3; 1 Chronicles 19:3ReciprocalNumbers 13:20 - good courage; Judges 4:20 - Is there Verse 4Exodus 1:19; 2 Samuel 16:18, 16:19, 17:19, 17:20; 2 Kings 6:19ReciprocalExodus 34:29 - wist; Joshua 6:17 - because; 1 Samuel 27:10 - And David; 2 Samuel 17:17 - stayed; Habakkuk 3:1 - she had Verse 5of shuttingJoshua 2:7; Nehemiah 13:19; Isaiah 60:11; Ezekiel 47:1, 47:2, 47:12; Revelation 21:25 the men went outJeremiah 50:20; Romans 3:7, 3:8Reciprocal1 Samuel 19:14 - she said; 2 Samuel 17:20 - They be gone Verse 6to the roofJoshua 2:8; Exodus 1:15-21; Deuteronomy 22:8; 2 Samuel 11:2; Matthew 24:17 hid themExodus 2:2; 2 Samuel 17:19; 1 Kings 18:4, 18:13; 2 Kings 11:2; Jeremiah 36:26; Colossians 3:3; Habakkuk 3:1

It is most likely that she was a single woman or widow, who obtained an honest livelihood by keeping a house for the entertainment of strangers; and not a woman of ill fame, as some have supposed. The spies sent on this occasion were certainly some of the most confidential persons that Joshua had in his host, and their errand was of the greatest importance; is it then not most likely that they lodged at an inn?
