It is a plant of the gymnospermia (naked seeded) order, belonging to the didynamia class. It has bushy stalks, growing a foot and a half high; small spear-shaped, close-sitting, and opposite leaves, with several smaller ones rising from the same joint; and all the stalks and branches terminated by erect whorled spikes of flowers, of different colours in the varieties of the plant. The leaves have an aromatic smell, and a warm, pungent taste. Its detersive, cleansing, and medicinal qualities were probably the reason why it was so particularly recommended in Scripture.strikeExodus 12:7 and noneMatthew 26:30ReciprocalExodus 24:6 - the blood he; Leviticus 5:9 - sprinkle; 14:4 - hyssop; 1 Kings 4:33 - the hyssop; 2 Chronicles 35:6 - So kill; Nehemiah 7:70 - basins; Isaiah 26:20 - enter; John 19:29 - hyssop; Habakkuk 3:1 - the first Verse 23will pass throughExodus 12:12, 12:13 and will not2 Samuel 24:16; Isaiah 37:36; Ezekiel 9:4, 9:6; 1 Corinthians 10:10; Habakkuk 3:1, 3:1; Revelation 7:3, 9:4ReciprocalExodus 11:4 - About; 12:7 - General; 12:27 - It is the sacrifice; Leviticus 5:9 - sprinkle; Joshua 2:19 - whosoever; 1 Chronicles 21:12 - the angel; Job 33:22 - his life; Isaiah 26:20 - enter; Ezekiel 9:1 - Cause; Amos 5:17 - I will; Acts 12:23 - the angel Verse 24Exodus 12:14; Genesis 17:8-10ReciprocalExodus 13:10 - General; Numbers 15:15 - an ordinance; Psalm 44:1 - have heard; 78:7 - not forget Verse 25whenDeuteronomy 4:5, 12:8, 12:9, 16:5-9; Joshua 5:10-12; Psalm 105:44, 105:45 accordingExodus 3:8, 3:17Reciprocal13:5 - thou shalt keep; Luke 8:38 - saying; Romans 9:4 - the service Verse 26your childrenExodus 13:8, 13:9, 13:14, 13:15, 13:22; Deuteronomy 6:7, 11:19, 32:7; Joshua 4:6, 4:7, 4:21-24; Psalm 78:3-6; 145:4; Isaiah 38:19; Ephesians 6:4ReciprocalGenesis 21:29 - General; Exodus 13:5 - thou shalt keep; Deuteronomy 6:20 - when thy son; 16:3 - mayest; Psalm 111:4 - He hath; Ezekiel 17:12 - Know Verse 27It is the sacrificeExodus 12:11, 12:23, 34:25; Deuteronomy 16:2, 16:5; 1 Corinthians 5:7 bowedExodus 4:31, 34:8; 1 Chronicles 29:20; 2 Chronicles 20:18, 29:30; Nehemiah 8:6ReciprocalGenesis 24:26 - General; Exodus 13:8 - General; Numbers 9:7 - we may not offer; Deuteronomy 6:7 - And thou shalt; 16:3 - mayest; Joshua 4:6 - when your; Psalm 78:3 - General; 81:5 - through; 111:4 - He hath; 145:4 - generation; Isaiah 31:5 - passing; 38:19 - the father; Zephaniah 2:3 - hid; Ephesians 6:4 - but Verse 28Habakkuk 3:1ReciprocalExodus 7:6 - General Verse 29at midnightExodus 12:12, 11:4, 13:15; Job 34:20; 1 Thessalonians 5:2, 5:3 the Lord smoteThe infliction of this judgment on the Egyptians was most equitable; because, after their nation had been preserved by one of the Israelitish family, they had, contrary to all right, and in defiance of original stipulation, enslaved the people to whom they had been so much indebted, had murdered their offspring, and made their bondage intolerable. When a relative died, every one left the house, and the women, with their hair loose, and their bosoms bare, ran wild about the street. The men also, with their apparel equally disordered, kept them company; all shrieking, howling, and beating themselves. What a scene of horror and distress must now have presented itself, when there was not a family in Egypt where there was not one dead! That these three witnesses have the truth, the chronology itself proves; for it is evident that the descendants of Israel did not dwell 430 years in Egypt; while it is equally evident, that the period from Abraham's entry into Canaan to the Exodus, is exactly that number. Thus, from Abraham's entrance into the promised land to the birth of Isaac, was 25 years; Isaac was 60 at the birth of Jacob; Jacob was 130 at his going into Egypt; where he and his children continued 215 years more; making in the whole 430 years.
