Between the death of Jonathan, who succeeded him and was murdered by Felix, and the high priesthood of Ismael, who was invested with that office by Agrippa, an interval elapsed in which this dignity was vacant. This was the precise time when Paul was apprehended; and the Sanhedrin being destitute of a president, Ananias undertook to discharge the office. It is probable that Paul was ignorant of this circumstance. They therefore made no scruple of acquainting the chief priests and elders with their conspiracy against the life of Paul, and applying for their connivance and support; who, being chiefly of the sect of the Sadducees, and the apostle's bitterest enemies, were so far from blaming them for it, that they gladly aided and abetted them in this mode of dispatching him, and on its failure they soon afterwards determined upon making a similar attempt - Acts 25:2, 25:3. If these were, in their bad way, conscientious men, they were under no necessity of perishing for hunger, when the providence of God had hindered them from accomplishing their vow; for their vows of abstinence from eating and drinking were as easy to loose as to bind, any of their wise men or Rabbis having power to absolve them, as Dr. Lightfoot has shown from the Talmud. 1 Samuel 14:24, 14:27, 14:28, 14:40-44; Psalm 31:13ReciprocalGenesis 28:20 - vowed; 37:18 - conspired; Exodus 1:10 - wisely; Leviticus 5:4 - to do evil; 27:28 - no devoted; Numbers 30:2 - swear; Deuteronomy 23:23 - hast vowed; Judges 21:1 - There; 1 Kings 20:10 - The gods; 2 Kings 6:13 - spy where; Nehemiah 4:8 - all; 4:11 - They shall not; Esther 2:22 - the thing; Job 5:12 - their hands; 24:5 - rising; Psalm 11:2 - that; 26:10 - In; 36:4 - deviseth; 56:6 - gather; 83:5 - For; 102:8 - sworn; Proverbs 12:6 - words; 27:10 - better; Jeremiah 11:9 - General; 20:10 - we shall; 44:25 - We will; Hosea 5:2 - profound; 6:8 - polluted with blood; Micah 2:1 - to; Habakkuk 1:4 - for; Matthew 10:17 - beware; 27:23 - But; Mark 6:24 - The head; Acts 6:11 - they; 9:24 - their; 12:11 - all; 14:6 - were; 20:3 - the Jews; 23:20 - The Jews; 26:21 - the Jews; Romans 15:31 - I may; 2 Corinthians 11:26 - in perils by mine; 2 Timothy 3:11 - but; 1 John 3:15 - hateth Verse 13which2 Samuel 15:12, 15:31; John 16:2Reciprocal2 Kings 6:31 - if the head; Nehemiah 4:8 - all; Psalm 83:5 - For; Mark 6:24 - The head; Galatians 5:11 - why Verse 14Psalm 52:1, 52:2; Isaiah 3:9; Jeremiah 6:15, 8:12; Hosea 4:9; Micah 7:3ReciprocalNumbers 30:2 - to bind; Judges 11:35 - I cannot; Esther 5:14 - the thing; Psalm 64:2 - secret; Proverbs 18:7 - his lips; Acts 23:21 - an oath; 1 Corinthians 16:22 - Anathema; Galatians 1:8 - accursed; 5:11 - why; 1 John 3:15 - hateth Verse 15that heActs 25:3; Psalm 21:11, 37:32, 37:33; Proverbs 1:11, 1:12, 1:16, 4:16; Isaiah 59:7; Romans 3:14-16ReciprocalJudges 16:2 - kill him; 2 Samuel 13:5 - Lay thee; Nehemiah 6:7 - Come now; Esther 5:14 - the thing; Psalm 35:20 - but; 59:4 - run; 64:2 - secret; Proverbs 12:6 - words; Micah 2:1 - when; Acts 22:30 - commanded; 23:20 - as Verse 16whenJob 5:13; Proverbs 21:30; Lamentations 3:37; 1 Corinthians 3:19 he went2 Samuel 17:17Reciprocal1 Samuel 19:2 - Jonathan; 23:9 - David; Proverbs 24:15 - Lay; Jeremiah 36:19 - General; 37:20 - lest; Acts 21:34 - into; 23:30 - it was; 26:22 - obtained Verse 17oneActs 23:23, 22:26; Proverbs 22:3; Matthew 8:8, 8:9, 10:16Reciprocal8:5 - a centurion; 27:54 - the centurion; Luke 7:2 - centurion's; 7:8 - under; John 18:12 - the captain; Acts 21:31 - chief; 22:25 - the centurion; 27:1 - a centurion Verse 18PaulActs 16:25, 27:1, 28:17; Genesis 40:14, 40:15; Ephesians 3:1, 4:1; Philemon 1:9 somethingLuke 7:40ReciprocalJudges 3:19 - a secret; 2 Kings 9:6 - he arose Verse 19tookJeremiah 31:32; Mark 8:23, 9:27 WhatNehemiah 2:4; Esther 5:3, 7:2, 9:12; Mark 10:51ReciprocalJudges 3:19 - a secret; 2 Kings 9:6 - he arose Verse 20The JewsActs 23:12 as23:15; Psalm 12:2; Daniel 6:5-12ReciprocalActs 5:9 - have Verse 21do notExodus 23:2 forActs 23:12-14, 9:23, 9:24, 14:5, 14:6, 20:19, 25:3; 2 Corinthians 11:26, 11:32, 11:33 an oathActs 23:14; Romans 9:3ReciprocalNumbers 30:2 - to bind; 35:20 - by laying; Deuteronomy 23:23 - hast vowed; Joshua 8:4 - lie in wait; Nehemiah 4:11 - They shall not; 10:29 - entered; Psalm 10:9 - He lieth; 59:3 - they; 119:95 - wicked; Ephesians 4:14 - lie Verse 22Joshua 2:14; Mark 1:44
